A common question we are often asked is, can I use an on demand hot water heater with a steam shower?  The simple answer yes, and we recommend it.  Tankless hot water heaters are the best way to increase the performance and enjoyment in your luxury shower.  There are several advantages to an inline heater has over traditional tank style water heaters.

Companies like seura have created a wide variety of both commercial and residential mirrors with waterproof televisions built in.  They are typically found in high end hotels and casinos but they also make a residential line.   I personally think this is the classiest way to add a television to your bathroom, although it might be out of budget for the average consumer costing between $3000-$15,000 a bit pricy.  You have to admit they do look pretty cool.

Having a television in your shower seems like a great idea and it is if done properly.  Unfortunately there are several models of steam showers on the market that have televisions, refrigerators and all sorts of other useless gadgets just waiting to break down, fail and frustrate their owners.  The problem is not so much the concept of these features just they way that they have been executed.  Water proof televisions typically cost around $1500-$4,000 so covering a cheap television with a plastic membrane although an affordable alternative, probably isn’t going to help the long term goal of being water or steam proof. We carried these units for a few months several years back and they were not up to our standards.

If you are really in the market for a television in your bathroom there are many different options.  With proper ventilation a normal flat screen can virtually anywhere.  Just make sure that the outlet you are using has a GFCI safety outlet.  If you really want a TV in your shower make sure you purchase one that is meant for that purpose.  EverVue is a company that specialized in different types of water proof television including out door televisions and ones that are meant to be installed in bathtubs and shower enclosures.

Finding walk in bathtub reviews online is a very tricky business.  Many companies pay people to make positive reviews on blogs and other sites, as well as on plumbing forums and any other place a final consumer would go to do research.  This is one thing that makes it difficult to decide what company you want to purchase a walk in bathtub from.  Having worked for a walk in bathtub manufacturer 3 years ago I have seen my fair share of horrible designs, and overall terrible products through contacts in the business.  I specifically remember one bathtub that the manufacturer had used window trim as the door seal and it leaked like a sieve.

Frame-less glass shower enclosures are all the rage with new home construction and high end bathroom remodels.  The cost of the actual doors varies greatly depending on the brand and the glass thickness.  You want to make sure that the glass is tempered and at least 5mm thick, this is a good rule of thumb for any shower stall.  Thick glass costs more to manufacture and ship and also can make installation harder because of the added weight.  For frameless shower enclosures also consider the cost of tile, plumbing fixtures and accessories as well as labor since this is above the skill level of most DIYers.

To save on plumbing fixtures and to add functionality shower panels are an amazing investment.  These pre plumbed shower towers offer all the benefits a standard shower would with the added bonus of body jets, hand held showers and tub spouts all in one unit.  They are also very easy to install and can even utilize existing plumbing lines.  They are a great way to save on labor as well.

Shower enclosure kits are a better option for most home owners because the kit comes with everything you will need for a quick install.  The bases of these are typically built on a stainless steel tubular frame which is supported by adjustable feet.  This is much easier than creating a pitched concrete floor base because the individual feet can be used on uneven surfaces to easily create the perfect pitch in the shower enclosure.  These shower enclosure kits also can have a wide variety of features not normally found other showers like built in radios, lighting, massage jets, and some even come with steam generators giving you the added bonus of a private steam room.  Shower stall kits typically take about 1-2 hours to assemble and utilize existing plumbing and drainage lines.  Within a day you can transform you out of date bathroom into a personal Oasis of tranquility.

If you are a middle class American a premade steam shower is probably a better fit for most homes.  They look great and come in a plethora of colors and finishes to match modern, traditional or contemporary home decors.  When it comes to cost you really can’t beat them just be aware that not all manufacturers are created equal.  Make sure the company you purchase from has been around for more than 5 years because it is one niche that has been known to have pump and dump importers of inferior products.

Chroma therapy lighting is another must have for a modern shower.  Its available in bulbs that you can install or they  have led lighting built into the shower heads now.  It can be very therapeutic however not everyone likes the disco shower look.  I personally love the chroma therapy lighting in my shower and its probably the one thing I miss the most when I am on vacation.

If you are going to take the risk of purchasing a steam shower on EBAY it is important to do your due dilligence.  If it seems to good to be true it usually is.  Avoid companies that say delivery can take 6-8 weeks.  These companies do not keep inventory and will ship you a unit from the manufacturer.  This sounds like a great way to save money until the glass shower your ordered is delivered as a box of sand.  Also check the sellers feedback and look at what they actually have sold in the past.

Most dealers will try and price match most competitors even if it is EBAY or Amazon and even if they don’t it doesn’t hurt to try.  My basic point is you get what you pay for.  If you find a steam shower that cost 50% less than anywhere else your probably sacrificing either quality or service and in most cases both.

Thankfully by educating the public through online media, forums and word of mouth  from our loyal customers honest companies like ourselves and a few of our closest competitors (I hate to give them credit but its due) have reversed this negative stereotype.  Basically its natural selection and capitalism at its best, if you sell an inferior product your company will die out.  Not to say that poor quality steam showers still aren’t sold but they are pretty much limited to venues like Ebay and other online auction and pay per sale sites.
