Vessel VS Under Mount Sinks

The Torino line comes with two sink options an under mount recessed sink or a modern vessel sink.  The comparison below shows how the vessel sink requires a taller style faucet in order to work properly the vessel sink also gives the vanity a modern flare.

Types of Shower Stalls

Shower stalls are constructed using a wide variety of materials.  Custom shower stalls are most commonly built using stone or tile along with a glass shower door.  Prefabricated shower stalls are more commonly manufactured using fiberglass or glass with a metal frame.

Fiberglass Shower stalls

Fiberglass shower stalls are probably the most common type of prefabricated shower stall.  They range greatly in price from $300-$5000 depending on the features and quality of the unit.  Most modular home builders use some type of fiberglass shower enclosures in their basic models.  Modern fiberglass shower stalls can have steam generators and body jets, these are a cheaper alternative to custom luxury showers.

Glass Shower Stalls and Doors

Glass shower stalls are the most commonly used in remodeling.  Glass is a higher end finish and is typically used in more upscale homes.  Many glass showers are retrofitted with a steam shower kit allowing it to double as a personal steam room.  Glass shower stalls can range in price but you can pick one up at big box stores for around $500, however if you are looking for a shower system with a more unique design shopping online is your best bet.  When shopping for a glass enclosure make sure that the glass is tempered safety glass.

Retro-fit Shower Stalls

Retrofitted shower stalls are most commonly used when replacing an existing bathtub.  When finished properly a retrofit shower stall will look like it is built into the wall.  There are many styles of built in shower stalls to choose from, some even come with a jetted bathtub as the base.

Corner Shower Stalls

Corner shower stalls are the most common type of shower seen in North American Homes.  There are thousands of different models to choose from coming in every shape size and color you can imagine.  In recent years modular corner shower stalls have become increasingly popular because they can be installed in a few hours using the existing plumbing and drainage lines.

Free Standing Shower Stalls

Free standing shower stalls are the most unique looking.  They are typically a free standing shower that either sits up against a wall or in the middle of the room.  Free standing showers are typically used in upscale master bedrooms or in open loft style apartments.  Their modern design and appeal typically come with a higher price tag.

The next step would be to install your water connection.  The best way to do this is to recess the connections into the wall behind where the walk in bathtub will be installed using the manufacturers recommend placement.  Most walk in bathtubs utilize a ½” hot and cold feed line that connects using flexible braided metal lines similar to a washing machine.

At this point you will want to make sure that the correct power source is in place if your walk in bathtub requires it.

Once the walls are finished where the walk in bathtub will be installed it is time to adjust the feet so the unit is at the correct pitch to drain properly.  Once the unit is level you will want to connect the water lines and then the drain using a Fernco connection.  This will allow you to disconnect the drain and slide the unit out if it ever needs maintenance.

Once the bathtub is installed you want to run clean water through the unit using all the features including jets, shower wands and taps to make sure there are no leaks.  This also cleans out any leftover debris from the manufacturing process.  As a last step many installers will use clear silicone to seal the bathtub to the wall.  This prevents water from leaking behind the bathtub while using the handheld shower wand.

The cheapest way to get your steam shower installed is to use a licensed electrician to run the electrical lines and then hire a handyman to do the assembly and installation.  Plumbing companies are not usually recommended for modular steam shower installs because of their high hourly rate and the fact that it really doesn’t require that type of expertise.  The truth is most of our customers have had better luck with handymen.

If you are thinking of using a contractor it is important to discuss with him what would happen in the event the shower arrived damaged.  Most contractors use contracts and charge hourly rates whether work is being done or not.  If your contract charges for down time it would be important to schedule delivery a few weeks ahead of schedule so you can make sure that everything arrives in proper working order.  Although damage is rare it’s better to prepare for the worst.
